In a world filled with the uncertainties of meretricious distractions, faithful servants of the Most High God are called to watch with utmost diligence. This imperative call to vigilance is well spelt in the words of Jesus Christ during his earthly ministry. We can very well find them littered across the pages of the King James Version of the Holy Bible which carefully reminds us of the necessity to remain spiritually alive and focused on the Heavenly race.
1 Peter 5:8, warns believers, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." This is a wake up call that drives home the urgency of remaining prayerful while preparing to be raptured with the Saints to Heaven. A diligent study of God's word at all times is the exact translation of watchfulness. It enables the believer to recognize and discern the Spirit of God equipping directives which coats the believer with the requisite demeanour for victory especially when is comes to resisting the Devil, his schemes and antics.
Jesus Christ, in the book of Matthew 26:41, advises us as his disciples while clearly saying "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." He was not just making a vague statement. He saw the end which happens to be the period we find ourselves in today. Remember, He is the same yesterday, today and forever. Those words of His are to reverberate in the hearing of every believer because his emphasis was on consistent search for opportunities to do the Will of God while persistently calling upon The Father of Righteousness for The Power to overcome evil. As you could recognize from Jesus's statement, the flesh is weak but the spirit is willing. It is expected of every believer to depend on the strength of God for victory. Diligent watchfulness empowers us to overcome temptations and remain steadfast in our commitment to the execution of His righteous Will.
The book of Proverbs 4:23 further reinforces this gamut, stating reassuringly, "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." Diligent watchfulness involves guarding our hearts and minds by frequently meditating upon the lessons from Christ's teaching, being conscious not to lay off godly influences while ensuring the confirmation of God's thoughts of good upon the lives of those around you as a believer is not eroded. By aligning our thoughts with God's word and guarding against lust, we can ensure that our actions align with God's Will, leading to a life characterized by godly wisdom and righteousness.
Furthermore, the parable of the ten virgins, found in Matthew 25, emphasizes the need for watchfulness in anticipation of our LORD and SAVIOUR Jesus Christ's return. In this parable, five of the virgins were wise and took with them extra oil to keep their lamps burning, while the other five foolish virgins neglected adequate preparation. The extra oil here refers to fervent prayers and consistent study of God's word. When the bridegroom arrived, the wise virgins entered into the marriage feast, while the foolish were shut out. This parable reminds us that the diligent and watchful will be ready when the Lord returns, while those who are negligent will face the consequences of their unpreparedness.
Throughout the Holy Bible, the theme of diligent watchfulness is coupled with the concept of faithfulness. In the book of Revelation 3:2, Jesus Christ commends the church in Sardis for their faithfulness and urges them to "Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die." Watchfulness and prayerfulness is stated as having connections to the preservation and strengthening of our faith. Diligent watchfulness ensures that our faith remains vibrant and alive, preventing spiritual compromise and decay.
As believers, we are called to diligently watch over our spiritual lives, guarding against distractions, overcoming temptations, and getting shielded from the snares of the enemy. Through prayer, meditation on God's Word, and adhering to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can cultivate an attitude of watchfulness that enables us to navigate the challenges of life with the wisdom and discernment that only comes from God.
In conclusion, if we faithfully and diligently watch in prayer and meditate regularly on God's word, our relationship with God will obviously outlive it’s smouldering state and we will ascend to meet the LORD in the air, when the trumpet sounds. Be sure to watch and you will not be left behind in Jesus Name, Amen.
